Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan, yesterday (Thursday) joined representatives of the community in Barra, including Councillor Donald Manford, to meet with Transport Minister, Keith Brown MSP, to discuss a range of issues affecting ferry services to the island.
Alasdair Allan commented: “A number of those representing the community and businesses of Barra had a chance at Holyrood to discuss some of their concerns about island transport needs with Transport Minister, Keith Brown.
“One specific issue discussed was the need to ensure that similar concessions apply for vehicles transporting live shellfish between the islands, across the Sounds of Harris and Barra, as already apply on the routes from the Western Isles to the mainland.
“I am pleased that the Transport Minister was able to confirm that these arrangements will now be made, something which I believe will benefit the shellfish industry throughout the islands.
“A range of other issues were discussed, including problems faced by all island communities during those periods when ferries are cancelled because of bad weather.
“This was a productive meeting and one which I believe serves as a good model for all island communities to engage with the Government about vital lifeline services.”
