Commenting on his meeting in the Scottish Parliament last week with the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), Highlands & Islands Labour MSP, David Stewart, has described the prices of fuel on the islands as “unfair” having a “disproportionate” effect on individuals.
Mr Stewart said: “The ‘Fair Fuel Solutions’ group has run an excellent campaign highlighting the issue over recent months and I have provided evidence on the unfairness of the situation to the OFT.
“The Competition Commission has a higher range of powers to investigate unfair practice, for example, they forced BAA to sell off two airports, but they need a referral from the OFT to investigate.”
Mr Stewart continued “I hope when the OFT’s interim report is published in January there will be significant evidence for action from the Competition Commission. I would also like to see a community solution which sees fair access by retailers to the fuel depot in Stornoway.”
