MV Isle of Lewis returns to service today (Friday) nearly a week after she was damaged by a fishing creel.

The creel was caught in the propulsion system causing damage to the vessel meaning she had to be repaired in dry dock in Greenock. The incident meant a reshuffle of the whole Calmac fleet was required to keep services running across the network.

The cost of the incident has not yet been quantified by Calmac.

Services between Stornoway and Ullapool were suspended on Saturday due to the breakdown and MV Hebrides has been covering the route since Sunday. MV Finlaggan was despatched to cover the Uig/Tarbert/Lochmaddy route.

A spokesperson for Calmac said: “MV Isle of Lewis is in dry dock in Greenock after a creel became fouled in the propulsion systems and caused damage to seals which are being replaced.”

While the ship was in dry dock it became apparent that some minor repairs to the hull steelwork were also needing to be carried out.
