Lews Castle College UHI’s new An Cotan Childcare Centre was officially opened last week by Eva Morrison and Lawson Macarthur.
Eva and Lawson are the oldest boy and girl currently attending An Cotan.
The new Childcare Centre caters for over 60 children and replaces the centre which was previously located in the complex of buildings around Lews Castle . These buildings have now been demolished as part of the project to redevelop the Castle into a hotel and museum - which is currently in it’s second phase of development.
The new centre was jointly funded by Lews Castle College , Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and ERDF and the Official Opening was timed to coincide with the date of the 60th anniversary of the Official Opening of the college by Sir Alex Douglas Home on the 24th of September 1953.
“It is fitting that the new An Cotan Childcare facilities have been officially opened on the Diamond Anniversary of the Official Opening of the college in 1953. An Cotan is a vital part of the range of services which Lews Castle College offers our students and the community. The new facilities are a demonstration of the way that while we at Lews Castle are proud of the achievements of the last 60 years we are also fully focussed on the challenges of the future . The Official Opening of our new An Cotan Facilities is just one example of the way the college is committed to improving opportunities and provide the facilities that will help our community meet the challenges of the future.” Said Mr Iain Macmillan Principal Lews Castle College UHI .
Amongst the other events which took place on the date of the Diamond Anniversary were the launch of two competitions for students . A “New Business Idea” competition and a Diamond Anniversary Engineering Challenge which is an Engineering Innovation competition with prize money of £ 1000. It is open to all full time Engineering students currently studying at the college . The Diamond Anniversary Engineering Challenge is co-sponsored by the Institute of Engineering & Technology [I.E.T.]
The next event of the college’s Diamond Anniversary celebrations is the launch of Lews Castle College’s new music base in Benbecula on October 9th . The base is located in the Isle of Benbecula Hotel, in Creagorry, which provides studio facilities and accommodation for the college’s music student and courses .
