Stornoway is hosting the Olympic Torch Relay this Monday, 11th June.
This will definitely be a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience – the same flame that will be carried up Bayhead will be seen by the largest television audience in history during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games on 27th July.
The Relay starts at 6.32am outside the Comhairle HQ and finishes at the athletics track at 7.34am.
The Police will operate a ‘rolling roadblock’ from 6.20am. It is crucial that spectators give themselves plenty of time to find a parking space and make their way to the route. After 6.20am, it will not be possible to gain vehicular access to the route and the Town/Council car parks will be effectively “closed off” until around 7.30am . (See below for more info on parking).
The map at http://www.cne-siar.gov.uk/olympictorchrelay/route.asp gives the Relay route and timings.
There are many places on the route that mean you can see more than one Torchbearer – for example, from Bayhead you can cross the YMCA bridge and see another section on the road to the College.
If you are going to attend the athletics track to welcome the final Torchbearers and witness the Olympic Cauldron being lit, then you are advised to be on the Sports fields by 7.15am. Access is through the gates at the rear of the Council Sandwick Road Offices by the ISL building.
The Celebration Event at the athletics track takes place between 7.35am and 8.05am and will feature Kathleen MacInnes singing with school pupils from across the Western Isles and Kirstie Anderson from IsleDance leading a mass dance routine.
It is also hoped to have a representative from the London Olympic Games Organising Committee present.
The Public are advised to take note of the proposed rolling closure of Stornoway town centre as part of the Olympic Torch Relay which is due to take place on Monday between 6am and 9am.
Drivers wishing to attend the event are advised to arrive early in order to access car parks prior to the closure.
Additional parking has been arranged at the Co-op on Macaulay , Tesco, Engebretsen lorry Park, Abattoir on Island road and at the rear of the Bus station in South Beach street.
Other parking will be available at the Media Centre on Seaforth Road and at the Free Church Continuing in Sandwick.
