Operation underway to recover broadband plough

Pictured is the Vessel Rene Descartes spooling the new fibre optic broadband cable ashore at Strond in Leverburgh, Isle of Harris.

This is one of five cables being laid in the Western Isles. The project has been progressing well, however there has been a set back at Lochmaddy with an operation ongoing to recover part of the plough equipment from seabed.

The plough got stuck in soft seabed sediments while laying the inter-island Harris to Uist cable, and when trying to recover it the tow wire broke. It is marked with a buoy and the relevant agencies - Marine Scotland, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, the Northern Lighthouse Board and Stornoway Coastguard – all have location details. The subsea work has continued, with the cable being laid out on the seabed and being buried by one of the remotely operated underwater vehicles.
