Young people aged 16 to 30 on the Outer Hebrides have a new opportunity to win prizes of £250 to £500, with the deadline on Thursday, March 26th at 5pm.

Cothrom’s Enterprise on the Edge project is launching the Inspiring New Business Competition to inspire young people on the islands to develop their business and social enterprise ideas.

The competition is designed to help young people grow their ideas.

“There are many young people in our communities with great business ideas, and some who have even trialled their business at a small scale,” says Thomas Fisher, who leads Enterprise on the Edge at Cothrom. “But they do not always have the confidence to launch into business more fully.”

The application form is designed to encourage young people to think through how they could start their business or social enterprise, to the point they can approach agencies like Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland or FirstPort for finance and other support to launch their business.

Enterprise on the Edge, which is funded by RBS Inspiring Youth Enterprise, has been coaching young people to develop ideas like computer services, animal care, music tuition, paintballing, shops, café and a travel agency, and help is available to young people to fill out the application for the competition.

Three independent judges will decide on the winners. One of up to four prizes is earmarked for the best applicant under 21, and one for the best social enterprise. The award ceremony will take place in mid-April, and will form part of a series of events to promote the benefits of mentoring and coaching on the islands.

Enterprise on the Edge is also exploring opportunities for young women who wish to further their business ideas.

Jade Cantos MacRury of Enterprise on the Edge will be attending the International Women’s Day celebrations in Daliburgh on March 7th.

The day will include a session on women in enterprise and explore whether it would help women entrepreneurs to come together in an informal network across the islands.
