The inpatient ward in Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh in Benbecula has reopened today (Thursday, May 30th) after an outbreak of Clostridium Difficile (C Diff).
A number of inpatients in the hospital had tested positive for C Diff which resulted in an Outbreak Committee being convened and enhanced infection control measures being introduced.
The inpatient ward was closed to new admissions last Wednesday (May 22nd) as an infection control precaution, to minimise the spread of infection.
In total, less than five inpatients in the hospital were affected.
The number of inpatients currently experiencing symptoms (mild to very severe diarrhoea) has now significantly reduced and robust measures have been put in place to ensure there is no further spread of the infection.
The NHS Western Isles Infection Control team will continue to monitor the infection control measures in Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh to ensure that effective control systems remain in place.
Following on from the implementation of restricted visiting hours during the outbreak, NHSWestern Isles has taken the decision to restrict visiting hours on a permanent basis in Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh, in line with arrangements in place in Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.
Visiting hours in Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh will now take place between 2pm and 4pm, and between 6pm and 8pm.
