THousands of homes were without a phone line yesterday and some 999 services were also cut off.
However it is thought that all lines are restored this morning.
A spokesperson for BT said: “Around 2600 customers in the Western Isles and parts of the Highlands are without telephony after a cable failure between Loch Broom and Gairloch.
“The fault, which was reported around 1.30pm, has also cut off around 1900 broadband users in the area.”
They added that a team of specialist engineers and cable jointers travelled to the cable site.
The communities which have been isolated are Eriskay and Shawbost in the Western Isles and Strathconon, Dundonnell, Torridon and Glenmazeran.
Northern Constabulary said today that services had been restored.
In a statement they said: “With effect from about 0150 hours this morning - Thursday, 09 June, 2011 - 999 services in ALL of these areas were restored in full following repair work by British Telecom.”
