DESPITE rumours circulating that an island resident has been arrested for the distribution of counterfeit notes, Stornoway police deny that any such action has been taken.

The fake £10 have been found circulating in the Western Isles over the last few weeks and a spokesperson for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Trading Standards Officers advised last week: “Although some counterfeit notes are easy to spot we would certainly advise businesses and shops to ensure that they check notes.

“This is good practice at any time and is made easier when an using ultra-violet checking device that will detect the ultra-violet security markings built into genuine notes as well as credit and debit cards.”

Counterfeit notes should be reported to the Police, and Trading Standards can be contacted on 01851 822694.
