The Police Station in Balivanich, Benbecula, is to be extended and updated as part Police Scotland’s Estates Strategy.
Police Scotland are currently in the process of purchasing an area of land between the station and the nearby Comhairle nan Eilean Siar building to provide the space needed for the new extension.
The project includes the upgrade of the charge bar, front office and cell area of the station as well as the new extension to provide improved welfare facilities.
Changes will also be made to ensure the building has better public access, a waiting area and a disabled toilet. A budget cost has yet to be set for the project but it is estimated to be about £300,000.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said the work to the Balivanich Station was originally due to be tendered last year.
He continued: “The process of purchasing the land [needed for the extension] is underway and the project is expected to be on site in the autumn.”
Balivanich Police Station serves the communities of Benbecula and North Uist and is one of five Police Stations in the Western Isles.
