The man who led the island’s ‘Better Together’ group has called for a new political alliance in the Western Isles - a ‘Team Hebrides’.
Former Labour MSP for the Western Isles, Alasdair Morrison, told the Gazette he has written to the Leader and Convenor of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar as well as the local SNP MP and MSP, calling for a united focus which he says would benefit the islands following the referendum on Scottish independence.
“We should all embrace the result [of the referendum],” said Mr Morrison. “Clearly a lot of energy has gone into in both island campaigns.”
He continued: “I believe people in both ‘Better Together’ and ‘Yes Scotland’ could help focus on what will make a real difference to people and work together.”
Ensuring more powers for Scottish islands as promised in the ‘Our Islands, Our Future’, campaign and securing a year round Lochboisdale/ Mallaig ferry route were two of the issues he said could be a focus of the new alliance.
