COMHAIRLE chiefs have had to call in a rat-catcher to pursue a gang of pesky rodents who have moved into the council offices.

A mainland pest control contractor has already visited the offices on Sandwick Road and at least four rats have been caught in traps in the building.

A spokesperson for the Comhairle said this was not the first time a rat had been spotted in the Comhairle offices but that investigations were ongoing into the scale of the problem.

He said: “We’re still in the process of assessing the situation. Once we have a clearer picture of the extent of the situation we can take appropriate action – if any is required.”

The company Ecolab has been employed by the Comhairle to deal with the rat pack at Sandwick Road and are due to return to investigate further this week.

Some islanders have complained that there has been an increase in the number of rats in people’s homes particularly in areas where the mink has been eradicated. A spokesperson for NHS Western Isles said they did not have any problems with rats or mice in any of their buildings.
