A SECTION of Sandwick Road will be reduced to single track for three months due to works required for the new Nicolson Institute.
As part of the on-going works, the main contractor FMP will commence operations to widen Sandwick Road (A866) between Smith Avenue and Matheson Road during the week commencing April 11 until July 18.
Sandwick Road will be closed to one lane of traffic during this period and this will affect traffic leaving Stornoway in an easterly direction, in the general direction of Stornoway Airport and Point. Traffic coming into Stornowayin a westerly direction will be largely unaffected.
Alternative diversionary routes will be signposted and pedestrian safety barriers will be erected on both sides of Sandwick Road to provide dedicated crossing points. Access to the Comhairle offices, the sports centre and the Acres Pitch car park will remain unaffected to vehicular and pedestrian traffic (subject to the above limitations) and will also be subject to one-way restrictions on exit onto Sandwick Road.
FMP and Sgoiltean Ura apologise for any inconvenience these essential roadworks may cause and thank everyone for their patience during these crucial works to improve the road network for all vehicle users and also for pedestrians with the introduction of safety refuge islands.
Further details, route maps and diversion information will be published shortly.
