The Western Isles Emergency Planning Co-ordinating Group (WIEPCG) met again today to discuss the severe weather conditions forecast for today. High wind speeds, possibly gale force, are anticipated throughout the Western Isles starting this afternoon and lasting until late tonight.

All schools in the Western Isles will close today at 1pm at the latest in light of the forecast. Evening bus services will be disrupted and sports facilities will be closing early. Further information will be posted later on the Comhairle website.

It is anticipated that schools will open tomorrow (Friday 4th February). However, given the worst weather is forecast for this evening, the situation will be kept under review. Any decisions to close schools will be made as early as possible and posted on the Comhairle website. The Education department will aim to make a decision no later than 9pm tonight.

Care services will also be affected. The mobile overnight support services will not be operating tonight and the Home Care and evening care services will not operate beyond 8pm. Staff will be in contact with service users so that earlier, alternative care arrangements are put in place.

Day Care services will cease at 2pm today.

Sports and Library services will close at 3pm in Lewis and Harris and at 2pm in the Uists and Barra

The drop-in physiotherapy session at Western Isles hospital, scheduled for this afternoon, has been cancelled.

It is anticipated that services will return to normal on Friday morning.
