The Secretary of State for Scotland Alistair Carmichael has commended one of the Western Isles food and drink success stories.

On a visit to the food hall at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh last Thursday the Secretary of State visited Hebridean Smokehouse and heard about their growth as a small family run business through to their success in selling high quality smoked fish to a number of the UK’s most well-known high end retailers.

Mr Carmichael said: “It was great to hear about Hebridean Smokehouse success with some of the country’s most recognised retailers.

“Premium quality food and drink in the high end market is an area where companies across Scotland are excelling and Hebridean Smokehouse - right at the heart of the community in Uist - is at the forefront of that success.

“There are huge opportunities for companies like Herbidean Smokehouse to export all over the world,” he continued.

“Through the UK’s global reach and network of embassies we are lowering market barriers and promoting Scottish produce overseas.

“Together as part of the UK we can sell our products and services to the world more effectively against international competition and as Scottish Secretary I want to do all I can to help more and more firms in Na h-Eileanan Siar and across Scotland exploit these global opportunities.”
