Dave Thompson, MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch was in Portee recently to speak at the launch of Angus Peter Campbell’s newest book, ‘An t-Eilean: Taking a Line for a Walk’.

Commenting on this, Dave said: “It is only through works such as this that we can hope to inspire a future generation of Gaelic readers and writers, and secure the long term future of our oldest language which is an essential part of the culture of the Highlands and Islands and of Scotland.”

‘An t-Eilean: Taking a Line for a Walk’ is part travelogue and part memoir, covering a walk across Skye and also dwelling on Angus Peter’s upbringing on South Uist and childhood in Oban.

The book is written in both Gaelic and English, and also contains a selection of photographs of Skye taken during the walk by Cailean Maclean.

Dave added: “In the age of the smart phone it is vital that we don’t lose sight of books as we must encourage our youngsters to appreciate not only electronic reading material but the more traditional paper based books as well.

“The written word has also been one of the key ways to preserve our Gaelic language as Sorley Maclean’s work shows, and Cailean, his nephew, is helping with his contribution to this book. Angus Peter has also made a huge contribution to Gaelic literature, both as an author and a poet, and I am delighted to welcome his most recent work.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed what I have read of the book so far, and would wholeheartedly recommend it, as it will stimulate the memories of those of you who grew up in a rural community and remind us all of just how unique and beautiful our country is.”
