Progress on Portree School

Dave Thompson, MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, is to question the Scottish Government on the progress being made on the new Portree Gaelic School on Thursday.

Commenting on this, Mr Thompson said: “I am very keen to ensure that the Portree development goes ahead as soon as possible, and I am concerned that there still does not appear to be agreement on the position for the school.”

Highland council are considering putting plans for a £12 million all-Gaelic school in Portree on their capital programme for 2015-16.

The Scottish Government made an offer of funding for this financial year, and then instalments over the next two, which regrettably has not been taken. However, the Scottish Government has offered to make the funding available in two year instalments instead of three, and so are committed to supporting this development as soon as it can progress.

Adding to this, he said: “It is unfortunate that the offer of funding from the Scottish Government could not be taken up this financial year, and it is vital that we ensure this proposed develop can progress at the earliest opportunity.

“Gaelic Medium Education offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Gaelic language, which hugely aids the process of learning a language.

“A new school at Portree would be a huge boost for young Gaelic learners on Skye, and I hope we can progress this development in the near future.”
