Tributes to Mr David Teale, who has retired after 15 years as Procurator Fiscal at Stornoway, were paid at a dinner in his honour at the week-end attended by staff, colleagues and friends. He will be the last of the resident Fiscal’s as in future the island courts will be covered by a fly-in fiscal service.

Born in Portpatrick he studied languages at Stirling University and then decided to study law at Glasgow Univeristy. Initially he went into private practice in Greenock and then joined the Fiscal service in 1990 in Glasgow and then moved to Greenock.

He came to Stornoway in 2000 and also had responsibility for Lochmaddy Sheriff Court in North Uist.

At the dinner in the Oak Room of the Caberfeidh Hotel he was presented with a coffee making machine, a cheese and wine hamper, as well as a dog bed for his collie Archie. His wife Kathleen was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Among the guests at the dinner were retired Sheriff Principal Sir Stephen Young, and other retired Sheriffs.

Sheriff David Sutherland of Stornoway described David as a man of principle and modesty. He had always enjoyed the cut and thrust between the Fiscal and the local solicitors.

He said David had prosecuted without fear or favour and the public needed to have confidence in the prosecution service. He had exemplified all that was good in that office. He wished him a long and happy retirement.

Tributes were also paid by Chief Inspector Gordon Macleod who said it had been a pleasure to work with him. Andrew Laing, the Procuruator Fiscal for the North of Scotland, recalled how he and David had joined the Fiscal service about the same time. He said David was an excellent court lawyer and a man of great skills and talent.

He had many good qualities and one of them was compassion. That would be his legacy for younger Procurator Fiscals. He expressed his thanks to him from all members of the Fiscal Service.

MC for the evening was the irrepressible Angus Macdonald, a local solicitor.
