Tea, Cakes and Memories at Sandwickhill School

TO START a series of events to mark the closure of Sandwickhill School, the school is hosting an informal tea and coffee evening to which all are invited.

The event will be held on Wednesday 29 February at the school from 7.30pm until 9pm.

As well as tea, coffee and cakes, a small exhibition of school photographs will be on display to kick start people’s reminiscences of their time at the school.

The school is keen to find more examples of photographs, report cards, records or other old school memorabilia which can be copied and returned to their owners. These will form the basis of an exhibition and publication to be produced in the final term as a lasting memorial to the school’s long history.

Sandwickhill head teacher, Calum Maclean, said: “This is the start of a series of events to celebrate the school and the role it has played in the local community. We’re keen to uncover more about the school’s history from former pupils and staff and this event is a chance for people to start sharing their memories.”

School pupils are also keeping their own log books, recording weekly life at the school, extracts of which will be posted in an online blog.

For those wishing to share memories but who cannot attend, there is a Sandwickhill School Memories page on Facebook where people can leave comments and follow the School’s activities.

The coffee evening event is open to all and is supported by funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig and practical support from Sandwick Community Council, Stornoway Historical Society and ERDF-funded Tasglann nan Eilean Siar, (Hebridean Archives).
