Ferries in the Western Isles were hit with repeated technical faults over the weekend, leaving passengers angry at the delays.

On Friday the MV Isle of Lewis experienced problems related to a stern ramp fault which saw the Ullapool/ Stornoway sailing held back for more then an hour and a half.

This was followed on Saturday by what was described by a CalMac spokesperson as a “starting problem”, leading to cancellations on Saturday and delays on Sunday.

The Isle of Lewis remained in port in Stornoway on Saturday night and left for Ullapool at 3.45pm on Sunday.

The disruptions left passengers angry, with one Gazette Facebook follower dubbing the ferry company ‘Caledonian Macbreakdown’.

Another said: “I can’t even describe how disgusted I am with the service. I got the text from CalMac five minutes after I arrived in Ullapool telling me the sailing had been cancelled! All I wanted to do was get home.”

Meanwhile on Sunday the Castlebay and Lochboisdale ferry departed Oban 25 minutes late following a problem with fuel oil heaters, which has now been resolved.
