Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have had second thoughts about axing the inter island ferry subsidy for business.
An eleventh hour deal has now been struck to continue the Inter Island Business Scheme (IIBS) for a further twelve months.
The reprieve has been welcomed by Na h-Eileanan an Iar MP, Angus MacNeil has welcomed Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar’s decision to continue funding the Scheme until August 2011.
Commented Mr MacNeil: “The Inter Island Business Scheme has been hugely beneficial to local businesses and has created employment throughout the islands and I am pleased that the Comhairle have pulled out the stops to continue funding this Scheme and safeguarding local jobs.
“I am however disappointed that HIE are not assisting the Comhairle by contributing financially to this Scheme. I will be writing to HIE to ask why they are not contributing to this Scheme which so obviously benefits local businesses.”
