In the last month Tesco has recruited 20 new staff for its Stornoway store amid mounting complaints from shoppers about a lack of stock on the shelves.
Tesco has put the recent increase in complaints down to a number of staff leaving the store recently. It is hoped the newly recruited staff members will help to improve the situation soon.
Social media, including the Gazette Facebook page, has been awash with complaints about the supermarket giant’s island base.
“Got to be one of the worst Tescos I’ve ever shopped in,” said one Gazette reader. “The only good point is the girls on the cash desks who have to listen to irate customers are always helpful and cheery.”
While another posted: “Tesco is a disgrace these days. Constant empty shelves and no choice. As for their special offers, if you don’t physically stand there as they’re putting them on the shelves forget about it.
“They treat Stornoway shoppers with contempt. If you’re unlucky enough to have to go in you have to fight through an assault course of trollies and cages.”
Another reader got in touch and said: “At this point in time one will find empty shelves all around the store.
“This will include items essential to shoppers, milk, bread and some fresh and frozen goods. Not helpful to Islanders who travel some distance only once a week to shop in Stornoway.”
Commenting on the situation Kevin Poke, Tesco Stornoway Store Manager, said: “I’m sorry to hear some customers have found certain products sold out in recent weeks.
“My team and I are working as hard as we can to keep the shelves fully stocked and in the past month we have recruited 20 new colleagues to help us provide the very best service to the local community.”
