The University of the Highlands and Islands is seeking applications for a chairperson of its governing body, the University Court.
The University Court is responsible for the strategic direction of the university and must ensure the good governance of the institution and its financial health, as well as managing risk.
The University Court is being reconstituted following a review of the governance and management of the university and in recognition of the changing nature and role of the institution. In line with the Scottish Government’s legislation on post-16 education, the university will be responsible for further education as well as higher education provision in its operating area.
The new Court will comprise 19 members including eight independent lay members, members drawn from the boards of the university’s academic partners, the university’s staff and students, the chair of the regional further education board and other members nominated by regional stakeholders.
The chair of the University Court must provide leadership to the members of the Court, ensure the conduct of business in a professional manner, and act as an ambassador for the university amongst its stakeholders and more widely. Those considering the role will need to have a background in senior management and/or governance in the public or private sector, including in a complex organisation.
The post is unremunerated however necessary expenses are reimbursed. The time commitment required will be a minimum of four days per month, averaged over the academic year. It may be necessary also to call on the chair at short notice from time to time.
