Uist Radio Ltd Directors appointed

UIST’S very own radio station – An Radio – moved another step closer to hitting the airwaves at the Uist Radio Ltd inaugural meeting which was held in Balivanich Hall, Benbecula, recently.

At the meeting seven Directors were elected and appointed to the Uist Radio Ltd Company – Dr Tony Vernon of South Uist was re-elected, as was Angus MacAulay from North Uist.

Newly appointed Directors include Donald MacPhee, Lesely Buchanan, and Alasdair MacEachen, all from Benbecula; Margaret MacLean from North Uist, and Mark Sheriden from Glasgow.

Sarah MacEachen from South Uist stood down as Director due to other committements, but all would like to thank her for her support and invaluable input in the setting up of An Radio.

An Radio grew from a community interest meeting organised last year by Local Development Officers Neil Campbell, Elaine Cleary and Catherine Eunson, with support from CnES’ Community Co-ordinator, Marie Campbell.

The project has progressed at an encouraging rate.

It has received letters of support from groups and organisations such as Ceolas, Taigh Chearsabhagh, Cothrom, North Uist Development Company, East Camp Trust, Sabhal Mor Ostaig, Sgoil Lionacleit and Castle College (Benbecula Campus); as well as financial backing from LEADER, CnES, Awards for ALL, CnES Community Regeneration Fund, former local councillor Martin Taylor’s Ward Fun and local charitable groups including SHARE (South Uist) and Benbecula Community Council.

An OFCOM licence was issued to Uist Radio Ltd in June this year and Directors are currently negotiating options for premises in the Benbecula area in order to set up and equip a studio and office facility.
It is anticipated that the service will be launched towards the middle of next year, 2013.

An Radio will provide a tailored radio service for the people of Uist and will depend on input and support from the community.
