The Volunteer Centre Western Isles is pleased to invite nominations for the prestigious local Volunteer Awards 2014, which will be held throughout the Western Isles during Volunteer’s Week, 1st – 7th June.

The awards are for the following categories: Young Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Organisation of the Year.

Ceremonies will take place in Barra, Benbecula (for the Uists) and Stornoway (for both Lewis and Harris) and nominations are invited from any individual or organisation using volunteers anywhere in the Western Isles.

There are outstanding volunteers and organizations in all parts of the Western Isles, and this is a good opportunity to recognise and celebrate their achievements.

Along with the categories mentioned above, the VC will be awarding other recently gained awards: the national Saltire Awards for young people; the VC’s own local awards for volunteering excellence - the WAVE quality standard award for organisations; the Callanish Youth Award for volunteers under 12; the Kishmul Award recognising the impact made by adult volunteers (26 and over) and the Clisham award for outstanding achievement made by exceptional volunteers.

All of these local awards are available for nomination throughout the year.

Joint manager, Kirsty Macdonald explained: “Our biennial awards ceremonies have proved very popular and are much appreciated by those involved.

“We know that people do not volunteer because they are expecting a reward, but it is important that volunteers know that their contribution is recognised and valued.

“Volunteering in the islands is almost double the national average for Scotland and without all that goes on, our islands would be noticeably lacking in services and variety of activity,” she continued.

“This is a great way to give a vote of thanks to some of the many volunteers in the islands. We would like to encourage nominations from as wide a range as possible to reflect this.

“The winners of the main categories of the Volunteer Awards 2014 in each area will be presented with trophies funded by sponsors of the event.”

Nomination forms for the 2014 Awards can be obtained from local offices of the Volunteer Centre or downloaded from the web site at www.volunteeringwesternisles.co.uk and the closing date for all nominations will be May 2nd when a panel with a wealth of volunteering experience will select from those nominated.
