To celebrate National Walking Month (May), NHS Western Isles has launched the ‘Walk on Hebrides’ Walk Pack, to encourage independent walking within the Western Isles.
Walking is one of the easiest ways to increase your general fitness and improve your health, and it is also a great way to stay trim and keep your heart healthy.
Further benefits are savings on petrol and bus fares, as well as helping our environment.
Each ‘Walk on Hebrides’ Walk Pack offers eight beautifully designed leaflets, each leaflet folding out into an A3 size information poster, containing maps of each area, community areas of interest, and descriptions of walking routes.
he leaflets showcase a selection of established walk routes within the communities of Great Bernera, Callanish, Rhenigadale, Scalpay, Berneray and Eriskay.
They feature attractive illustrations by local artists including Janet Marshall, Meg Mitchell, Alan Braby, Chris Spears, and Bill Neill.
As well as information on the walking level, walking distance and approximate time for taking each walk, further information is also included on crofting codes, safety advice, and transportation to each location.
Walk on Hebrides has also recently held Volunteer Walk Leader training, and regular free led walks are expected to be held within Lewis communities later this year. Walk Leader training is to be delivered on Harris later in the year.
Walk on Hebrides is also planning a series of free led walks to be held during this year’s Hebrides Celtic Festival, with details available shortly.
So whether you are able to get out more often for a walk, are able to change how you travel to work, or just want to stretch your legs at lunchtime, the Walk on Hebrides service and its new ‘Walk on Hebrides’ Walk Pack is here to help you get back into enjoying regular walking.
