Trading Standards Officers and the Police are warning consumers to be aware of a banking phone scam which is currently operating in the Western Isles.
These callers are encouraging the responder to phone their own bank on the number given on the rear of their bank card.
The caller keeps the line open whilst the responder immediately contacts his or her bank. Instead of connecting to the bank the responder is connected with the caller and is then asked to divulge personal bank details.
Some people may wrongly assume they are speaking with a bona fide bank official. The public should exercise great caution in making such a call.
The advice is to never give out such details either on the phone or on e-mail, and to be aware that reputable companies will not contact you in this manner.
