Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Alasdair Allan, has today (Wednesday, December 18th) welcomed the forthcoming summit organised by Fergus Ewing MSP, Minister for Energy, which sets out to secure a fairer deal for island renewables.
The event, which will involve the leaders of Scotland’s three island councils, follows a decision by the UK Government to set a single ‘strike price’ for energy generated in the islands.
Dr Allan commented: “While I welcome the UK Government’s recognition of the different costs of generating power in Scotland’s islands compared to the mainland, as yet they have not accepted that these costs vary significantly from island to island.
“While a strike price of £115 per MW/h is progress on the £90 per MW/h used on the mainland we still have to ensure that the Western Isles gets the figure that suits their own needs.”
He added: “It is welcome therefore that the Scottish Government is pressing Westminster on this issue to ensure that renewable developments in the Western Isles are possible in the future.”
