A SEARCH for a missing canoeist is underway this morning (Monday, December 27) on the west side of Lewis.
The Stornoway Coastguard search and rescue helicopter has been called into action and Stornoway RNLI lifeboat launched at 10.20am today to reports of the possible missing man who is believed to have set off from Callanish on Christmas Day.
The search has been activated as a vehicle has been found which has not moved since December 25.
Although a note is visible within the vehicle with a phone number on it, no other details as to where the canoeist was going or when expected to return are present.
A member of Stornoway Coastguard team said: “We’re worried but have no other information so the search has been launched.”
Island Coastguard rescue teams from Stornoway, Breasclete and Miavaig are also currently searching the area.
Local company Seatrek have also launched three boats to assist, with another three vessels being launched by fish farmers Scottish Salmon to help with the search.
