A WHALE which has beached at Gerinish in South Uist is being allowed to die naturally after experts concluded that there is nothing that could be done to save the animal.

Veterinary experts, along with volunteers from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, have been trying to keep the whale – though to be a rare Sei whale – as comfortable as possible.

The whale was first seen at around Tuesday (October 4) lunchtime, but it is possible that it may have lain on the beach for some time.

After inspection, experts concluded that the animal is suffering from some kind of brain injury and could well be in a coma.

There was a discussion on Tuesday evening as to whether to administer a sedative, but the general consensus of opinion was that it would be better to ‘let nature take its course’.
