Wind turbine creates first job

Horshader Community Development (HCD), a Community Trust on the west side of Lewis has employed a Development officer to ensure that the funds soon to be generated by the community turbine are distributed according to the outcomes identified by the local community.

Angela Macleod, who lives in the local community with her family, was employed in January by HCD.

This post is for three years and will enable Angela to go out into the community and ensure that community transport provision, fuel poverty initiatives and local community groups are supported.

The post has been funded by the Big Lottery, Growing Community Assets fund, which is also funding some of the other outcomes.

The group have also been supported by Community Energy Scotland and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar throughout the development of the turbine.

Angela MacLeod said, “I have always been interested and active in community initiatives which encourage community development, growth, and empowerment.

“Having previously been employed with WIE; CnES and in Gaelic Media; in addition to being self-employed for a number of years I am looking forward to taking on this new challenge and plan to visit households in the Horshader area in the coming weeks.”

Horshader Community Development is based in the Ionad na Seann Sgoil, North Shawbost which is where Angela will be working from.

The 900kW turbine is aimed to be installed and generating an income in the second half of this year.
