IT MAY have been noticed that in Stornoway many of the boats are now out of the water and on the new, improved hard-standing area.
Fenced off and lit at night, the improved facilities are so much better; and the fencing, whilst not full height, provides a welcome respite from standing in dog excrement at the bottom of a descent from a precarious ladder!
However 'An Sulaire'
and 'Jubilee' remain in the water which means that when the weather is not inclement we can still manage a weekend sail.
'An Sulaire' is even on the pontoons which provides easy access – if for nothing else than to pump the water which gathers inside the boat after a heavy rainfall.
It is surprisingly hard work, and I would hate to have to do it at sea.
The weekend saw The Kenny Mobil Dance Band, The Ness Melodeons and guests appear at Ness Social Club for a fundraising event for 'Falamadair'.
Whilst it was a busy night all over the island with events on at the Clann McQuarry Centre, £250 was raised, which was good show and thanks go to all who turned up to support the night.
This weekend, Saturday, December 5, sees the return of The Kenny Mobil Dance Band and The Ness Melodeons, Oidhche Chiadain – and hopefully some surprise guests from Harris – for the An Sulaire Barn Dance.
Tickets are £6, children are free, and there will be food and dancing all night long.
It is not an evening to be missed, a cult following has developed, so get your tickets while you still can.
Otherwise 'An Sgoth', which was the video made of the building of 'An Sulaire' in 1994 has now been converted to DVD and is on sale for a mere £10. Plus £1.50 p&p.
You can obtain one from The Secretary, 6 Bain Square, Stornoway HS1 2HH or by phoning Amanda on 706546 or Seamus on 705320.
We hope to have them in various outlets round the town as well. Just in time for Christmas! AM
