A GIRLS' football team from Sgoil a' Bhac have defied their young age and won their way through to the finals of a national competition.
The girls – coached by Dano Macdonald and Willie Macdonald – will now take on the cream of Scottish competition at the final in Hampden, on a date yet to be confirmed.

While the national Coca-Cola Sevens tournament is open to all Scottish schoolgi
rls aged 14 or under, the school roll at Back means that Dano has had to select some players from Back Primary School.

He said this week: "They have done extremely well. You expect the older ones to do well but the younger ones have to work twice as hard to keep up. We will be going away to the final with three primary children in the team, and I reckon we will be the only team with primary kids there."

To get to their lofty position, Back first qualified from a Western Isles qualification round, along with Castlebay.

The Highlands and Islands heats were held at the Highland Academy at the home of Ross County, Dingwall, and here the girls qualified for Hampden along with Dingwall and Elgin.

"Our highlight was going to the Highland Academy, and anything we get now is just a bonus," said Dano.

"There were tears of joy when the girls won and they realised they were going to Hampden, and getting an overnight stay, as well as a day off school!"

Adding to their success were team members Louise Stewart and Louise Martin, who were spotted by talent scouts and will now train with the North of Scotland Regional Squad when they next meet, scheduled for next Thursday, April 10.

"Both girls deserve the recognition, and this in turn gives the other girls something to strive for," added Dano.
