BARRA's half marathon saw a record 157 runners flock to the island on Saturday, each one prepared to run the island's 13.1 mile ring road.
The run went swimmingly, though all runners reported a touch journey. The jaunt from Castlebay to Northbay on the island's west road was fairly straightforward; but the return journey was against the wind and full of hills – not to mention the island
's steepest hill, which this event saves for the last mile.
Entrants were nowhere near last year's record time of 1 hour 13 minutes, with Ben Kemp – a familiar first-place finisher in all of the Isles' marathons – coming in at 1.21.44.
"I thought the day went very well," said Race Director Katie MacNeil. "Everything seemed to run very smoothly, and there were no major hiccups.
"With that many runners, you aware of concerns about traffic being on the road, but we coped well with it. We do need a lot of volunteers to do the Barrathon."
"Katag has got it so well organized with her usual experience, and the volunteers do keep coming back because they know they are working with her," added Margaret Ann Elder of the Volunteer Centre. "It's the perfect example of how an event like this can be run so well by volunteers."
Part of the draw to Barrathon for so many of the participants was the enormous buffet provided by dedicated island hands, not to mention the hopping Vatersay Boys ceilidh which kept the runners celebrating until the wee hours.
Thanks go out to all who helped with cooking and serving, timing, record-keeping, marshalling and manning water stands, as well as to all competitors.
