A TOURNAMENT consisting of Barra, Benbecula/South and North Uist was eventually won by the Benbecula/South side after some excellent games on a cold but crisp day at Daliburgh School.
The first game between Barra and North Uist produced an excelent performance by the young Barra side with Craig Ferguson in scintillating form for the Barraichs and some of the goals scored, not just by Craig but his team-mates were real top drawer s
tuff and they totally outplayed North Uist to win by 7 goals to 3.
In the second game Barra were up against Benbecula and obviousy still feeling the effects of the first game were finding it tougher and it wasn't long before the Benbecula South team went ahead through a Joe MacNeil header.
Barra though rallied again with Ferguson pulling the strings ably supported by the elusive Mish up front and they were soon level.
When the scores were eventually tied at 3 goals all, Barra had one hand on the trophy but terrific late goals from Peter Buckland gave Benbecula South a 5 goals to 3 victory.
All Benbecula South needed now was a draw against North Uist in the final game and when Peter Buckland again scored a terrific solo goal it looked very much like the trophy was heading Benbecula way but Jamie MacDonald did equalise with a last minute penalty and indeed if it wasn't for Neil MacDonald in goals they indeed could have snatched a winner giving Barra the trophy on goal difference.
It wasn't to be though and Benbecula South secured the trophy courtesy of their 4 points!
A great days football and a special mention to Barra who played excellent one touch passing football and were very unlucky not to get their hands on the trophy with Craig Ferguson, Mish and Screech excelling. North Uist had fine displays from Jamie MaCDonald and Gordon Kennedy while Peter Buckland, Joe MacNeil and Matthew MacDonald were top players for Benbecula South.
An Indoor Event is planned in the next few weeks and further details will follow in due course.
A special thanks to Tom Rankin, Headteacher and John Angus, Janitor for giving us the use of the Daliburgh School facilities, it was very much appreciated by all concerned.
