A BUSY period at Stornoway bowling club started with the John Macrae mixed pairs competition, the bowling club's equivalent of Mr & Mrs.
With some very strong pairs the teams reaching the semi-finals were Isa Dickman/Mike Ferris versus Margaret and Norman Macleod and Alane Campbell/Duncan Macmillan versus Catriona and Johnny Hamilton.
In the first semi after three ends the score w
as 2-2, but Norman and Margaret started to pull ahead, and with two ends left to play the score was 8-2. In the next end Mike and Isa scored three shots bringing the score to 8-5, but they were unable to overcome Margaret and Norman, who went on to take three shots on the last end to win 11-5 and reach the final of this competition for the fourth time.
In the other semi Catriona and Johnny went into a 3-0 lead but Alane and Duncan scored three shots in the third end to keep on the pressure.
Undetered Catriona and Johnny took single shots in the next two ends only to see Alane and Duncan pull level with two shots in the sixth.
With two ends to play Catriona and Johnny took two shots in seventh leaving Alane and Duncan trying to score two shots in last to force an extra end, which they were unable to do, scoring just a single as Johnny ensured he had second shot to win.
With Catriona and Johnny winning this meant that it was their second time playing in the final of this competition.
Although both pairs had played in the final before neither had won, so there the trophy would be won be a new pairing.
The final started with Margaret and Norman taking one shot in the first end only to see Catriona and Johnny take four shots in second.
The third end went to Margaret and Norman with another single, but Catriona and Johnny hit back with another four shots in fourth.
However, Margaret and Norman battled back taking a single shot in the fifth and taking four shots in sixth. The score was now at 8-7 and the spectators were wondering if Margaret and Norman could sustain the momentum, but Catriona and Johnny hung in and took a single shot in the seventh end. With only two shots separating the teams it was all to play for in the last end. Norman had his last bowl to play and Catriona and Johnny were laying shot, so Norman needed to move the jack to score at least two shots, unfortunatley he missed, so the new winners were Catriona and Johnny who had played so well over the two nights.
On the Saturday the Sports Council rinks was played with six teams playing in a round robin of eight ends a match.
After some very close fought matches the eventual winners were Margaret Macleod/Ian France/Duncan Maclean/Mary Matheson winning four out of five games, with the team of Greta Wallace/Johnny Hamilton/Ena Macleod/Norman finishing second with three wins and a draw, but unusually, the team who finished third by winning three games actually had the highest shots difference on day.
So after two competitions we had the visit from Conon Bridge and Maryburgh bowling club to look forward to, this was played on Friday, June 12 and we could not have hoped for a better evening with the sun shinning and no midges. This match was played between six triples on each team, with four of the Stornoway triples winning and only the triples skipped by present President Duncan and previous president Mike losing, nevertheless Stornoway won 80-73.
Thanks from the club go to everyone who made this visit such a success.
We would like to thank the Ness Melodeon band for entertaining us.
We now have two away matches to look forward to against North Kessock bowling club and Waterloo bowling club on the 19th and 20th so good luck to all involved.
