A RECORD number of women raised a huge amount of cash last Saturday as they turned out for the Women's 5k Cancer Challenge on one of the hottest days of the year so far.
523 women completed the course through Lews Castle Grounds and on the day more than £6400 was raised with sponsorship still to come in.
Event Organisers Tony and Kirsty Wade said they were absolutely delighted with the success of the day and the
record turnout.
Speaking on Monday, Tony said: "What is most important for us is not raising all that money, although that is great, but the most important thing is getting women more active."
With more than 500 women all in the one place at the same time, this event was the largest sporting event ever to take place in the Western Isles.
Tony and Kirsty would like to thank the many individuals and businesses who gave of their time, services and expertise to help make the event a success.
They are: The Stornoway Trust; Callum Iain Macmillan and staff at Lews Castle College; Grillburger; Hebridean Water Coolers; Morag Macdonald; Gavin Earons; Kenny Smith and Myrna Gomez; Doreen Kallis; Stornoway Rotary Club; Lewis branch of Cancer Research UK; The Stornoway Gazette; David Morrison, Donnie Saunders and staff from Isles FM; British Red Cross: Vital Signs; Janet Macleod and ISL staff; Jonathon Maciver at The Bridge Centre; Stornoway Running and Athletics Club; Stornoway Golf Club; all the Stewards without whom the event would have been impossible - and anyone else who we have inadvertently forgotten - you know who you are - thanks!
