On Wednesday, 23rd July 2008 the British Police Track and Field Championships 2008 were held at the Harringdon Athletics Stadium in Middlesex.
Northern Constabulary were represented at this event for the first since since 1997 by Sergeant David Ogilvie, Nairn, Constable Craig Harris Inverness and local Constable Cameron Ross, Stornoway. Sergeant Ogilvie achieved an 8th Place in the Hammer, 5th place in the discus and he threw a lifetime best distance of 11.88 metres in the Shot Putt to win the bronze Medal. Constable Harris achieved two personal best performances in the Shot Putt and Discus also throwing the Javelin but not achieving a podium place. Star turn probationer Constable Ross who managed to run a gruelling three races over 400 metres distance the first being a flat 400 heat to reach that final followed by the final of the 400 metres hurdles soon after.
Constable Ross looking to run for Stornoway Running Club next season won a Silver Medal in the Hurdles event being just edged out by a three-time winner of the event from the Metropolitan Police. In between Cameron managed to hop, skip and jump his way to a Bronze Medal in the Triple Jump before finishing a brave but ultimately fourth in the flat 400 metre final.
Northern finished a respectable 11th place in the final medal table amongst the 35 competing forces notably finishing well above Lothian & Borders and Fife who had considerably more people in their teams. In fact, Strathclyde was the only Scottish Force to finish above Northern.
This was a successful event for the fledgling team and it is hoped that 2009 will see an even stronger group return to claim even more medals and hopefully some winner's cups!
