ON Saturday the annual Club Championships competition was fished on the Westside out of Carloway as usual.
The weather was fine with very calm conditions in the morning, but in the afternoon the wind swung round to a westerly direction and increased to a stiff breeze which rapidly increased the rate of drift of the boat.
Most of the day was spent fishi
ng the soft ground at our usual 30 fathom mark with all the species that would be expected at this time of year, with the bulk of the catch being made up of red gurnards, haddock, whiting, cod and of course pest mackerel.
Also caught were Ballan and cuckoo wrasse, spurdog, dabs, coalies, lythe, lesser-spotted dogfish, megrim, ling, pouting and poor cod.
In the afternoon the anglers gave the hard ground close in a go, but with not a lot doing and just a few lythe, cod, small coalies and a couple of wrasse coming aboard! The fishing was very slow up till 'lines up' at 3pm when the boat headed for home and the scores were totted up on the way in!
This year's Club Champion is C.J.Buchanan with 27 fish, 11 species and 187 points for 100%. In second place was Gillies Mackenzie on 26 fish, 11 species and 180 points for 96.26%, with Angy 'Mopp' Macdonald third with 21 fish, 11 species and 167 points for 89.30%.
