THE bowling outdoor season got well and truly under way on Saturday with the first competition of the season, the Sime Cup 4 bowls pairs, being played this year as an all day Saturday competition instead of a midweek knockout as previously.
Twenty-six members entered and pairs were drawn out of the hat with each team playing four qualifying rounds of six ends..

Three teams qualified for the semi-finals by virtue of having won all their qualifying games, Agnes Munro and Norman Macleod
who finished top at the end of the qualifying section with plus 26 shots; Mary Matheson and Willie Macleod with plus 22 and Ena Macleod and Katie Mary Macdonald, who finished with plus 17.
The fourth pair to qualify having the highest shot difference of those who won three games were Dan Macmillan and Angus Murray.

In one semi-final Agnes and Norman were beating Dan and Angus 6-1 after four ends but Dan and Angus scored five on the next end to draw level with one end to play. However Agnes and Norman recovered to win three on the last end.

In the other semi Ena and Katie Mary were doing well leading Mary and Willie 4-2 after three ends but then Mary and Willie scored five and went on to win 7-5.

With the heavy green taking its toll on strength particularly when playing long jacks, the finalists were all tiring and in the final Agnes and Norman dealt Mary and Willie a huge psychological blow by taking six shots on the second end. Mary and Willie never recovered and Agnes and Norman went on to win 16-3 and take the cup.
