ISLAND thrill-seekers are in for an incredible treat next month, when the crème de la crème of the world's skateboarders and BMX bikers visit Lewis.

Together with Stornoway's own John Neil Mitchell, the current European and UK quad-bike champion giving a display, the roof of the Lewis Sports Centre will be quite literally shaking on Saturday March 19.

Organised by staff of the Lewis and Harris Youth Club's Association, the showcase by Team Extreme – the UK's only professional extreme sports show team - will be what is known as a vertical halfpipe display.

Coinneach Morrison, of the LHYCA, is organising the event.

He said: "We wanted to host an event which would appeal to young people within the Western Isles and we were keen to facilitate an innovative event which promotes an active lifestyle.

"In trying to come up with events or displays which had never taken place in the Western Isles, it was suggested that we enquire about booking a skate-board display team and in making our enquiries it quickly became apparent that Team Extreme are the best in the country so we were delighted when they agreed to come to the Islands.

"We also felt that John Neil Mitchell is a great role model for young sports enthusiasts within the Island as he has demonstrated that for a young person living in the Western Isles who dreams of one day becoming a World Champion, that dream can still become a reality.

"John Neil has an extremely hectic schedule on the professional racing circuit and we are extremely grateful that he has taken time out to take part in this event. "

Given the nature of the tasks the performers will be engaged in, certain modifications will be required at the venue.

As such, a specially cordoned-off area will be used in the Council park cark, where John Neil will show off his manoeuvres.

The cost of attending this event is £10 per person which entitles the spectator to witness both the vertical half-pipe display from Team Extreme and the outdoor quad display by John Neil Mitchell.
