THE Under 16 football League Cup, sponsored by Lews Castle College, saw table-topping United pitted against Ness.
If United thought this was going to be a stroll in the park then after ten minutes Sam MacSween made them think otherwise. He won the ball in the centre of the park and surrounded by three United players, looked up and fired a 40 yard shot which completely deceived Ally Lamont in the United goal.

Ness troubled United for the next four minutes until a swift passing move ended with Gordon MacLennan shooting home. We all waited for the United juggernaut to take over, but Ness had other ideas. Josh Harris went on a run down the left and placed the ball beyond the keeper only to see Ally MacDonald clear off the line.

Josh was clean through after a mistake in the United defence but failed to hit the target. These chances were needed as United went two up after a neat goal by Gordon for his double. Fraser MacLeod, last week's hat trick hero, then produced a nice piece of skill but his volley from 18 yards came back off the post.

This was a good match both teams playing some good football. Just as half time approached United made it 3-1. Fraser won the ball and went on a run down the left. His cross found Gordon whose shot was blocked but the ball went to Mikey Paton and his shot cruelly deflected over the Ness keeper.

The second half began with a flurry of activity in front of the United goal, but Ness could not find the net. United recovered from this and Mark Morrison slipped past two defenders to fire a shot from 18 yards into the roof of the net. This was the beginning of sustained United pressure. Ness did break out occasionally but Stuart Flower was on hand to mop up any threats that appeared.

Under this unrelenting pressure Ness had to give, and from a Calum MacPhee free kick, Fraser, with a lovely touch made it 5-1. The game then saw a number of chances for United but with no further scoring United were worthy winners.

Next Saturday is the third in a series of Junior finals. The Kemnay Cup will be contested at Under 14 by United and Western Thistle.
