It is that time of year when runners, joggers and walkers dig out their trainers as the Autoparts Stornoway Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run has been confirmed for Saturday, May 24, at 10am.
The event, organised by Stornoway Running and Athletics Club, is one of the highlights of the island’s sporting calender, with runners travelling from all over the UK to join the many local runners on the streets of Stornoway.
The choice of 13.1 miles, 10K or a two-mile fun run means there is a race for all abilities and, with three months to go, there is still plenty time to train for those who want to set themselves a new challenge or get back into shape.
It’s also a good opportunity to test the fitness for those training for the Callanish Stones Marathon in August.
The Half Marathon starts at 10am from Lews Castle College and will follow the usual route: the first half around the town before entering the Castle Grounds for the second part of the race.
The 10K starts at 11am just beyond Cuddy Point and follows the Low Road to the golf club before heading up to the castle where it joins the half marathon route to the finish. The Fun Run will start at 10.15am from the golf club car park.
There are medals and goody bags for all finishers and awards for winners and runners-up in each category. There will be a ceilidh in the Golf Club on the Saturday evening for all the runners and their friends and family.
Tickets cost £5 and will be available at race registration on the Friday evening. There is also a buffet for all runners at the prize-giving in the Bridge Centre after the races.
SRAC are delighted to welcome local business Autoparts Stornoway Ltd as main event sponsors and this year’s event is also supported by Run4it and Lews Castle College..
Entry forms can be found at the Sports Centre, Autopatrts, and Sportsworld. For more details about the race or to download an entry form or enter online go to the club’s website at www.srac.org.uk. Registration for the races takes place in the sports hall of the Bridge Centre on Friday, May 24 from 5.30pm till 9.30pm. No entries for the half marathon or 10K will be taken on race day but the Fun Run can be entered either on the Friday evening or between 9.00am and 9.30am on race day.
