Have your say

There have been a couple of busy weeks at the Bridge Club with some new faces making an appearance. The Club extended a warm welcome to its newest member, Catriona Winterholt, who is on the Island for a few weeks and is currently partnered with Jimmy Ogilvie. There was also a warm welcome to John Martin from Dingwall Bridge Club who played last week with Ken Macdonald in an SBU Competition. Pat and Alice Read (from the Thursday Bridge group) have also become fully fledged SBU members which is a huge bonus to our wee club.

Last week was the SBU Simultaneous Pairs (Lord Thompson) Competition. On a local level the winners with 63% were Rita MacDonald and Janet Smith with Murdo Kennedy and Norah MacDonald just behind them in second place with 61%. Once the scores were ‘nationalised’ they slipped down the leader board but Stornoway still had 2 pairs in the top 10. There were 341 pairs competing overall and congratulations go to Stewart MacDonald and NL MacDonald who were 2nd, and Jean MacLeod and Derek MacKenzie who were 9th.

This week was the Clansman Trophy and there was another great turn-out of 5 tables. Janet and Rita found a fantastic 6NT bid on board 13 which Janet played and made and Jenny Morrison and Gerda Graauwmans found their slam on board 5, with Gerda playing in 6C.

Henk Graauwmans and John Murdo MacLean took advantage of some timid bidding by the opposition on board 17 and took a top with a 3H contract.

In third place was a new combination of Stewart MacDonald and Liz Carmichael. They finished the evening with 53%.

In second place were Mike Norman and Iris Stewart with an impressive 58% and signs that their partnership is developing into a force to be reckoned with.

In first place this week with a score of 60% were Derek MacKenzie and Jean MacLeod. Another good week and congratulations to you both!
