Stornoway swim sensation Kara Hanlon has received a welcome boost with the news that a magnificent seven local businesses have created a sponsorship pool to help fund her continued progress in the sport.

RMk Insurance, Events Card Shop, Spar, Lewis Builders, Alasdair Macrae, Maclennan Coaches and Car Hire Hebrides have joined forces to offer crucial support to the teenage swimmer who is continuing to make a huge splash in the sport.

Kara, 16, has already represented the Western Isles in Bermuda at the Natwest Island Games, and she has earned a huge haul of winners medals both in the Scottish Schools Championships and also the British events.

Roddie Mackay of RMk Insurance said: “We all thought it would be a real shame if Kara was denied the opportunity to improve and develop her obvious talent simply because she was finding it difficult to meet the ongoing travel costs.”

A spokesman for the group added: “We have started a fund which we know will help Kara to travel throughout the coming year and this will allow her to focus completely on her training and competing without having to worry about the associated costs.

“We hope other business will like the idea of supporting our young talent and will feel free to chip in and we will look again at her progress and finances in a year’s time.”
