The Uist and Barra Football Association have spoken of their delight that nine newly qualified referees will be plying their trade in the league after successfully completing a rigorous weekend of examinations at Sgoil Lionacleit.
A big thanks to Christine MacQuarrie who organised the course with the assistance of Christina MacWilliams and a special thanks also to Iain Stewart who acted as the referee coordinator for the duration of the study period and assisted with all lessons over a period of a few months.
Association members were equally thrilled to find out that John Fleming from the Scottish Football Association and who is Head of Referees visited the island to assess the candidates along with Bill Machray and assisted with the final examinations.
Now local players and supporters can look forward to welcoming Iain Stewart (who will co-ordinate the referees throughout the season) and his team of referees to this year’s league.
The Uist and Barra Football Association are also pleased to announce new sponsorship for both the Summer Cup and Billy MacNeil Cup, with the Summer Cup being sponsored by Graham MacLeod Driver Training and the Billy MacNeil Cup being sponsored by MacLeod Insurance Services.
Negotiations are also underway for a league sponsor in what would be a clean sweep.
This year’s league kicks off on the April 11 with champions Iochdar Saints hosting Benbecula, North Uist United hosting Southend and Barra entertaining Eriskay in Castlebay.
It is also hoped that the new facility at Daliburgh School will be in use at some point which would ease the pressure on the two pitches at Liniclate.
