The under 18 Ladywell Cup Final sponsored by Galson Motors takes place this Saturday between Western Thistle and Aths, which is a repeat of last year’s final that saw Aths prevail three-two after extra time.
Both teams are evenly matched with Aths having made a flawless start to the season and Western Thistle having only lost one match – their opener against United. The two teams have not yet played in the league as their scheduled match was cancelled due to the inclement weather that prevailed throughout May so predicting a winner is difficult.
Elliot Ruddal, Robert Jones, Daniel Macleod and Mark Maciver have all made a major contribution to the Aths senior team and Jones has progressed to the Select side. The downside of this from Aths’ point of view is that it means he is going to miss the final as he will be travelling to the Island Games on Saturday. Due to there being no Back team entered into the under 18 league Aths have managed to pick up a number of players from that area with Domhnall Barden, Colin Maclean and Sandy MacNeil all having made appearances for the Back senior team.
The Western Thistle team also contains a number of familiar faces to watchers of senior football with Ally ‘Barvas’ Macleod recently having made his debut for the Select, which he marked with a goal in the Midsummer Tournament. Gordon Campbell, last year’s man of the match, is also a regular for the resurgent West Side senior team and both players have made major contributions to the three trophies that West Side have won in the past year. Kevin ‘Barra’ Macneil and Calum Macleod have made a number of appearances for Carloway and Calum will be hoping to follow in Chris and Seamus’ footsteps by ensuring that all three brothers have a Ladywell Cup winners medal in the trophy cabinet. The Western Thistle Under 16 team which recently won the League Cup Final supply a number of players to the Under 18 team and Innes Iain Morrison and Jack Buchanan, who scored in the under 16 final will both be involved this Saturday.
It is hoped that a big crowd will be in attendance to watch this eagerly awaited final.
