GLASGOW Island will make their way back across the Minch in the New Year with another trophy in their grasp after the exiled islanders won the Broadbay Senior Five-a-side football tournament this week.
The specially arranged five-a-side indoor event drew a team from all nine Lewis and Harris league clubs and a representation from Glasgow Island for the solitary senior football silverware available over the winter.
Split into two sections of five teams, every side were guaranteed at least four matches with the two section winners meeting in the final.
Glasgow Island won the first section after beating Back, Stornoway United, Aths and Ness while the other section was won by Lochs who picked up wins over Carloway, Harris and Point before going down to the West Side in their final group match.
In the final the two sides couldn’t be split as they battled to a 1-1 draw but in extra-time Glasgow Island man Danny Mackenzie, a regular in the past for Lochs, bit the hand that once fed by netting what proved to be the winner to seal the trophy.
Calum ‘Duff’ Graham presented the winning team with the trophy on behalf of hosts Back FC and Recreation Club and the hosts also extended their thanks to ref George Mackaskill for officiating every match on the night.
