THE continued development of athletics in the Western Isles took a giant leap forward last Saturday as Stornoway Running and Athletics Club (SRAC) hosted a triangular club match against Aberdeen AAC and a combined team from Helensburgh AAC and Clydesdale Harriers.

Like any other of the island’s sports clubs that have to travel off island to take part in competition, SRAC have to overcome many difficulties. There is the very obvious cost of travel to competition at district, regional or national level and overnight accommodation for squads often up to 40 strong is also a huge financial burden parents and the club.

The commitment to take part in mainland competition can result in up to ten trips per year to the mainland has huge cost. So what a break through for SRAC’s young developing local athletes to now have date on the annual calendar for the Tri-Club Match Invite!

See this week’s Stornoway Gazette for the results and more picture of the action.
